“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”

Ok, I will have to admit that I finally sat down and watched a full episode of this (wouldn’t call phenomenon, but a show that has intrigued and lit up the Facebook statuses of middle school and high schoolers for months) show called The Secret Life of the American Teenager. I knew the type of show it was, one of those pseudo-attempts at capturing the “real-life” drama that is experienced in highschool, all while giving positive ideas and morals at the same time (i think), to those actually confused and lost student wanting some direction. To be honest, the lines were so blurred between what they were depicting at was right and wrong, that it was kinda scary. Now I know that in high school and middle school, things are very blurry, but in this episode it was so confusing I thought my high school experience made more sense!
Despite all that, I must give this certain episode credit. This episode was dealing with the subject of sexual purity and the right and wrongs of being sexually active. You have a group of girls trying to find out what is right for them, what is good for them, and a few select girls trying to find out what is right to God. All this goes on while these poorly depicted male high school teenagers are stereotypically unconcerned about anything but themselves and their poor relationships with their girlfriends. What hit me was when one of the girls were called into their principle’s office, along with her mother, to discuss an uproar that this particular girl caused. She began to openly proclaim her own ideas of sexual conduct and it took this particular school by storm. When in the principle’s office, the principle asked the girl and the mother something along the lines of, “well what does the church say about it/believe?” And the girl responded with something like, ”I don’t know, we dont make the rules, but they never really talk about it. Not that we really follow our church’s rules anyways, but they don’t really say.” To say the least I was taken back, but sadly agreed to this depiction.
As youth workers, church leaders, preachers, and pastors, we have to answer the tough questions. This was a very real and authentic look at what our high school and middle school students face. Even though some may not seem to follow the rules, or you might think everyone does, they understand the entire Bible, and are just faithful followers; the truth is they struggle. And although they struggle, they listen and want to know. Don’t assume those you lead understand, don’t assume that they “get it” or that if you don’t line out and discuss the tough question without an explanation that they will follow it. We have to be willing to face the hard questions. We have to be willing to talk about the “gray” areas and issues within our culture. Because if we don’t, someone will. And the other night, that was this certain t.v. show. I would hate to think that any students would have to hear it from this t.v. show and that’s it, because there was no direction on any of the subjects. If anything they made it seem ok. And that isn’t good enough.
So be bold. Speak with love and grace. Understand who you lead. Discuss the hard questions, and give reasons to your answers. The reason why all this even matters is because you love your students, and those you oversee. And if you don’t, they will be influenced elsewhere.
Hope = Life
Hallo all. I want to share a note I wrote from when I was doing a study in the book of Colossians.
Paul, a preacher who at one time was killing and persecuting Christians, had an encounter with Jesus along a road called Damascus. This encounter with Jesus changed his life forever, and would in turn, cause him to become a believer and avid preacher of Jesus Christ in the world. This same Paul who tore apart Christians families a few years earlier by killing their fathers, mothers, sons and daughters for their faith, would one day stand before them and preach the Gospel. Imagine the pain he would have to see in their eyes, the possible pain, hatred, and anger that could be inside these people. And in spite if even all that, he would be imprisoned multiple times, stoned multiple times, and even left for dead. But here is where I would like to zero in a for a moment. In Colossians 1:23 Paul tells the church in Colosse that they should “not be moved away from the hope that is in the Gospel, whereof I am made a minster.” Paul knew what it was like to not be moved just from the very hope of the Gospel. The hope of a man named Jesus that died, was buried, and rose again to bring forth grace and mercy, and how it would be lived out and experience in his own life.
Sitting in prison alone, he had hope of the Gospel, while being stoned he had hope in the Gospel, when being affirmed by God himself and no other ministers would come to him but Barnabas he had hope in the Gospel. He had hope in the power of the resurrection that would brought him redemption and reconciliation, and redemption and reconciliation to the world. This hope is what would give him life in dead situations and times in his life. At pivotal moments in his life, the grace of God would be more real to him then ever, those same families that were torn apart, would again stand before him when he preached, and even if none of them forgave him, Jesus had already forgave him and even made him a preacher. He experienced that hope from the Gospel first hand. The hope that even a murderer could make it to heaven and take people with him.
Just like Paul.. Have you hurt people and can’t get over your shame? Do people not trust you or believe in you because of your past? Have you made mistakes? Have you ever felt not good enough? Do you feel like you are in a prison or closed off from your destiny and purpose? Have hope in the Gospel. Because there is always life in dead situations; when you stand firm and keep hope in the Gospel. There is always a resurrection after you lay a dream, a friend, a ministry, a relationship to rest; when you keep hope in the Gospel.
*(Colossians 1:23) If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
When a man LOVES a woman..
Hallo everyone.
I was in a service the other night and I was reminded of the story of the Gospel (not a surprise I know). But While the preacher was talking about the power of the Holy Spirit and how it has transformed our lives, and how the: death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest and most radical story to every be told ans lived. I was reminded also that my life has been changed because someone preached me the Gospel and salvation. And since I have found my true happiness and purpose in Jesus Christ, that if I love someone, I mean really love someone, then I would want to share that same story with them.
Now I am sure you were looking for a funny story, rest of the song lyrics to this title, or maybe even a webcam shot of me singing some Kenny G, but the truth is: If we really love someone, then we will want them to be the happiest they can be. And the ultimate happiness and peace we can share with someone is the Gospel and Salvation. I was reminded of the fact that someone shared those two things with me, and it is my job to share it with others. Let me share just a bit.
There was a man named Jesus (who was actually God incarnate and lived among his own creation), who lived a perfect life with no sin. And because this man (named Jesus) died a death, willingly, for our mistakes (because we all have sinned, but he never sinned once), that because he died for us, in our place, today we can have forgiveness. We don’t have to acknowledge our mistakes and feel like there is no way out. But we can trade all our lies, pride, anger, lust, jealousy, gossip, and all other sin, for forgiveness. We can all have peace that God isn’t angry at us, or ready to strike lightning bolts at us. We are called to be just like Jesus, and since Jesus: died, was buried, and rose again, we do the same. We follow Acts 2:38 and die (repent), become buried (baptism), and rise again (the Holy Spirit in our lives). If you love someone you will share that at the right time with them. I wanted to share this with you. So when a man loves a woman, a parent loves their child, a friend cares for a friend, or when God loves his creation, he gives us: The Gospel and Salvation.
*Acts 2:38-Then Peter said to them: Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
